The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) strives to be nationally and internationally recognised for its artistic excellence, innovation, education initiatives and community engagement programmes.

Central to its mission is a belief in the value and transformative power of music to inspire, engage and build connections among diverse communities, thereby contributing to nation building. It endeavours to challenge the prevailing perception of classical music performances being elitist and Euro-centric by performing music that incorporates the greatest examples of both classical and South African music traditions.

There is a sincere commitment to consistently high standards of performance, with the aim of not only delivering quality performances to audiences, but also establishing the bench mark for aspirant musicians.

The future of the JPO is intimately woven with the future of classical and orchestral music in South Africa. In order to ensure its sustainability and transformation, the JPO is actively involved in education and development programmes, playing its part in developing an appreciation of classical music for all generations to come – across all ages, races and people of South Africa.

As part of the orchestra’s vision, the JPO harnesses the talent of young South African musicians through collaboration with music centres and local universities, conductors’ workshops and partnering with youth orchestras and choirs.
